Telescope Peak

Climbing to the top of Telescope Peak (11,049ft[ 3,368m) is a difficult yet rewarding 14 mile round trip hike from Mahogany Flats campground. The clearly marked trail guarantees spectacular photographic opportunities the entire way. Looking east Badwater is below you, as are the Black and Funeral Mountain Range's. Looking west you'll see the Panamint Valley and the snow covered Sierras in the distance. At around the 10,000 ft elevation, ancient Bristle Cone Pine trees line the way. Allow a full day for this strenuous hike and travel light. One camera body with a short zoom lens ( e.g. 20-35mm or 35-70mm ) works well. A monopod will steady your camera and doubles as a walking stick. Great caution should be taken, as in some places the path is very narrow and slippery with  tremendous drop-offs. This is not a hike that you would want to take the kids on.

It is a good idea to check at the Rangers station concerning the condition of the roads in this area. Flash floods can do great damage to the roads and they often cause road closures. The last three miles that lead to the Camp Grounds is made up of a rough dirt road that is not always accessible by passenger vehicle.
