Rhyolite Ghost Town and the Glass Bottle House With a life span of 12 years and a population of up to 10,000 people, Rhyolite can truly be described as a boom town. Gold was the motivating force. Discovered by Frank Shorty Harris and Ernest L Cross in 1904 on a nearby hillside, Rhyolite soon blossomed into a cosmopolitan city, complete with stock exchange, hotels a school and even a red light district. All that remains now are a collection of buildings in various states of disrepair, including one built by Tom T Kelley from old Beer and liquor bottles. The Glass Bottle House as it is known, is currently managed by Mr. Clint Boehringer. Clint is always ready to impart his considerable knowledge of the structure and surrounding town with great humor. Rhyolite is located in Nevada, on Hwy. 374, 35 miles from Furnace Creek. | |
