Dantes View

Dantes View, (5700ft) located on the eastern side of the Park in the Black Mountain Range is one of the best places to get an overall view of Death Valley National Park, the view extends some 50 miles north and 20 miles to the south. Directly below is the Badwater area and the extensive salt flats, with the Amargosa River draining in from the south and Salt Creek from the north.20 miles straight ahead you will see the highest Mountain in the Park, Telescope Peak (11,049ft) which is part of the majestic Panamint Mountains. Beneath Telescope Peak the giant Hanaupah alluvial fan reaches out onto the Valley floor.

This popular spot is easily reached, from Furnace Creek take 190 east for ten miles then make a right turn at the sign posted intersection, 13 additional miles will bring you to the parking lot at Dantes Peak. Most visitors only stay at this windy location for a few minutes, but there is much to see here, take a minute to imagine ancient lake Manly that filled the Valley below 20.000 years ago, it was 100 miles long and 600ft deep.

Caution. The 13 mile section from highway 190 is off limits to vehicles longer than 25ft, as the final approach to the parking area is very steep with extremely tight turns.
